How to weatherstrip a door with variable gaps.?

I just put up stick-on rubber weatherstripping (5/16") all the way around for my door. Now it's a little hard to close, yet on the vertical lock side and the horizontal top, there is not a good seal at all points. On the vertical, there's good seal in middle, but above and below, light is visible. On the horizontal top, one side also has not a good seal. Is this just a bad old door that should be replaced? Should I switch back to the metal & rubber kind of strip that you screw in on the side of the door stop?

If the gap along the top of the door is bigger on the latch side (as opposed to the hinge side), take the screws out of the bottom hinge at the frame. Cut yourself a couple pieces of thin cardboard (3"x1") out of something similar to a cereal box. Place the cardboard shims between the hinge and frame, staying close to the hinged part of the hinge.
Put the screws back in. Go right through the cardboard where necessary. Test the door. Add or subtract shims at that hinge as you see fit.
This will help give you a better hang on the door and snug up some of your gaps.
