Why do only a few modern cars (like Rolls-Royce) have suicide (rear-hinged) doors?

I don't mean doors that lead to suicides but doors that are hinged to the central pillar (rear-hinged) rather than the A-Pillar. The best example is the Rolls-Royce (pic link attached).

"Suicide doors" were very popular in the gangster era of 1930's. The only aspect why they are not making a commercial comeback is the name, "Suicide doors". How they got this name is unknown but in the era before seat belts, if the passenger was leaning against the door, out he went.

The design was based on the coach doors of horse drawn conveyances. The footman used to open the door for Her Majesty and he used to stand discreetly behind, hewing to protocol.

With the retro fad in, the rear swinging doors are making a comeback. Converting a front hinged door to a rear-hinged one is very expensive. And so, due to the demand of the consumers, the rear-hinged doors are here now.

The doors are not so perilous now since the car designers have invented ways to make them safer. The ones on new models are only rear doors, generally with the front door overlapping the rear. The front door must be opened first, so that even an unlatched rear door cannot easily fly open.

Rolls-Royce calls them coach doors and Volvo has'nt given any name. Volvo has simply said that the doors are hinged at the rear instead of the front. The rear doors on the Phantom do open independently of the front ones, and a safety interlock electronically secures the rear doors when the car is moving.

Suicide Doors - Why that name for car doors?

Heard this reference to front car doors that had the hinges on the central column, so they opened outwards from the seat position as opposed to the dash. Just wondered where they got this name from. I was watching a prestige car auction at the time and had never heard that description before. Is it because if you are driving towards a cliff edge the doors prevent you from escaping safely?
